Prom Getting Ready Checklist (Day-Of Timeline)

6 min read · RoomMaxx

A prom getting ready checklist has three parts: prep two weeks out (outfit fitting, appointments, transport), set up your getting-ready space the night before (good light, a mirror, one clear surface), then follow a day-of timeline that works backward from when you leave. Build in 30 minutes of buffer, because something will go wrong, and that's fine.

The getting-ready space is where most people get stuck: if your room's a mess or badly lit, RoomMaxx scores it from one photo and tells you the one fix that helps most before the big day. Scan my room

Quick note for the UK and Canada: prom might be your Year 11 or Year 13 prom (UK), your grade 12 grad or prom (Canada), or senior or junior prom (US). Same checklist, different name.

Two weeks before

Your prom prep checklist starts here. Most day-of chaos comes from stuff that should've been sorted now.

The night before

Your night before prom checklist is about making tomorrow-you's job easy.

Set up your getting-ready space

This is the part every dress shop's prom checklist skips, and it's what makes or breaks your prom GRWM (get ready with me) video and your photos.

Background

The background of your room is in every mirror selfie and GRWM. Clear the floor and chair behind you, make the bed, and hide the laundry pile.

This is the moment it gets hard to judge: your room's too familiar for you to notice the clothes chair in the back of every shot or how flat the overhead light looks. RoomMaxx notices for you. Snap a photo and get a Room Score out of 100 across tidy, light and vibe, plus one small fix aimed at your lowest score, like killing the overhead light or clearing the chair. Scan my room

Prom checklist for guys

Shorter timeline, same buffer. Haircut a few days before, not the same day. Shave or trim about an hour before dressing. Iron or steam the shirt in the morning. Shoes polished. Tie practiced the night before (YouTube is your friend).

Prom checklist for girls

Or anyone doing full glam: book hair before makeup if your stylist touches your face, and get dressed last. Wear that button-up shirt during hair and makeup.

What to bring in your bag

Your prom bag essentials, a.k.a. the mini prom emergency kit:

Small bag? Give a few items to a friend with a bigger one or leave a kit in the car.

Photos before you leave

The photos before you leave are the ones your family will actually frame, so give them five minutes.

  1. Pick your spot: near a window or outside in shade. Avoid harsh direct sun.
  2. Clear the background: no laundry baskets, no shoes on the floor.
  3. Shots to get: full outfit, close-up, with family, with your date or friends, shoes and corsage details.
  4. Take a few in your room if you set it up nicely. Your getting-ready space doubles as a photo corner.

Doing a group get ready? Check our prom getting ready party ideas for hosting at home on a budget. And if prom season overlaps with exams, a finals week survival kit helps you get through both.

Get your room prom-ready before the big day

FAQ

What should be on a prom getting ready checklist?

Outfit and accessories, appointments, transport, a packed bag, a set-up getting-ready space, and a day-of timeline with buffer time. Doing most of the prep two weeks out makes the day itself calm.

How long does it take to get ready for prom?

It varies a lot. Full hair and makeup can take three to five hours including appointments, while a simpler routine might take one to two. Work backward from your leave time and add 30 minutes of buffer.

What should I bring to prom in my bag?

Phone, charger, ticket, ID, money, a lip product, bobby pins, blister plasters or band-aids, mints and safety pins. If your bag is tiny, share a kit with a friend.

How do I set up my room for getting ready for prom?

Face a window or put a lamp or ring light in front of you, turn off the overhead light, clear one surface for your products, and tidy whatever is behind you so it doesn't show in photos.

Is a UK prom checklist different from a US one?

The steps are the same; the names change. UK proms are often for Year 11 or Year 13, and you might call it a "prom" or "leavers' ball," while US students have junior or senior prom.

Snap your room, get your Room Score out of 100 for tidy, light and vibe, then one fix a day that moves it. Rescan and watch the number climb.
